The average learning outcomes for primary school students in India are dangerously low. According to the 2014 ASER report, 48% of Std. 5 students are reading at a Std. 2 level or less. Whilst in Math, 74% of Std. 5 Students cannot do division. By in large, India’s primary school system is fundamentally flawed with students suffering poor learning outcomes and thereby decreased motivation to learn.
To address this issue, mGuru organisation has built mobile learning applications aimed at enhancing the basic literacy and numeracy skills of students. MGuru’s English app uses interactive learning activities to teach grammar, speaking and listening, providing students all the tools they need to speak and understand English. The app includes topics on grammar, vocabulary and the alphabet. The app is available in a number of Indian languages eg: Gujarati, Hindi and Marathi.
The mGuru Math app provides student a host of adaptive practice problems and assessments, and teachers a comprehensive repository of material according to topic. An intelligently designed algorithm allows the app to generate any problem in K-5 for nearly every Indian curriculum.
With the creation of these applications the organisation has been able to empower 1,200 students till date and a number of teachers and parents across Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Delhi, Kolkata and Bangalore with the scope of expanding into Tier 2-3 cities.
